Olympic Inspiration for Baby Names
![]() |
I am getting so excited about the upcoming Winter Olympics in Vancouver, are you?
There is just something about the sportsmanship, the camaraderie among stations, and the compelling stories of the life behind the athletes.
Stories like Dan Jansen whose sister died of leukemia just hours before he was to compete for gold in the 500 speed skate or Herb Brooks coaching the U.S. Hockey team to gold in 1980 are those that bring tears to your eyes and inspire a love of the games.
Interestingly enough, if you look at the years of Olympics, many of their given names show a mini-spike in popularity in the baby name charts. Over the years many of those athletes who are now in the Olympic Hall of Fame have little namesakes all over the world.
How about you, what Olympic athlete (American or otherwise, summer or winter, past or present) bears a legacy that you admire? Share your thoughts with others on our “Inspiring Olympic Athlete Names.“
